A Brief History
My name is Don Benoit, I have always had an interest in mechanical design but didn’t pursue it initially. At the age of 25 I got a job driving truck at a local tool and die shop, in addition to driving I was also being trained on the equipment. As a result of my aptitude and growing interest in CNC, I directed my focus in that direction.
There was a lot of design work involved with programming at this time in the trade, at least at the shop I was at. I would be supplied a 2D CAD drawing and build my own 3D surface models with which I would program from. A couple years into the trade I was introduced to Solidworks and have been using this software since 1996.
Solid modeling quickly became a passion for me and is a career I thoroughly enjoy. Offered an opportunity to do some design work at home I began this part-time as well for many years. With my unique skill set pairing of design and manufacturing I have successfully set up numerous manufacturing operations for former employers.
Becoming disenfranchised with the lack of support in these endeavors, as well as some major life changes, I changed direction in my career and became a full time mold designer.
Which Led Me Here
Applying decades of mold building as well as design experience I settled into this role easily. This transition occurred in 2018. In 2019 I decided to start my own CAD business, Apex CAD services LLC. I continue to work full time as a mold designer and we have a great relationship with my employer.
